The assessment was based on game abundance - number of tracks or bird sightings per 10 km of the route. Recent data (State Report: 2003, p. 121, 132) indicate that the Suojärvi District harbours the most abundant populations of the red squirrel (ranks 1st among other 17 districts of Karelia), wild boar (2), moose (3), pine marten (1), polecat (1), capercaillie (2), black grouse (1), as well as far more abundant than the regional average populations of the grey wolf, Arctic hare, red fox, lynx and hazel grouse.
